Mayor’s Message October 2011
By Bill Strickland, Mayor
WHAT AN AWESOME COMMUNITY. THANK YOU FOR A FANTASTIC FALL FESTIVAL. There were many people who helped with this event. Billie Johnson and Donna Henson were Co-chairman for the event and were in charge of securing our sponsors and auction items, with help from Jessica Petersen, Judy Champagne, and many others. Linda Agrella handled our advertising and signs and signed up all of the vendors. Donna Henson assembled our BBQ team who did an outstanding cooking our briskets for us. Cooking team members were G W and Eunice Roulston, James and Rayleen Ketchum, and Willie Bozarth. Kenneth Mims donated the use of his BBQ Pit, and Johnny Goode donated the firewood. Thanks to all of you for the delicious BBQ you cooked for all of us to enjoy. Marianne Stavinoha headed up our kitchen crew and they did a marvelous job. Thank you Lana Powell, Holly Powell, Virginia Stavinoha, JoAnn Griggs, Amy Griggs, Tammy Temple, Pat Grupe, and Nancy Pieper. We thank Kent and Marie Middleton for cooking the beans for our BBQ dinner. Those who helped with the desserts were Sandy Loper, LaDaune Ashley, Delores Nolen, and Delana Nolen. Jeanie Bergeron signed up all entries for the car and tractor shows and counted the votes. We awarded three beautiful trophies in each show, which were donated by Compu Tech Signs of Texas City. Thank you Jeanie for making this such a fun show for everyone. We thank Mayor Bill Strickland for contacting the car and tractor clubs and asking them to enter our shows. Gail Strickland sold the tickets for the BBQ plates, BBQ sandwiches, desserts, and games. Thank you to everyone who entered our pie contest. Thanks also to our judges Bubba Rouse, Pat Powell, and Jason Pitts, and to Judy Champagne who directed this event. A big thank you to the community for furnishing cakes and other desserts, and to Jessica Petersen for holding our cake walk. Linda LeFevre and her family took care of all of the children’s games this year and did an excellent job. All the children really had a lot of fun. Our auctions were a great success, and we thank Barbie Hicks and Judy Champagne for taking care of the bids and payments. Many thanks to Sonny Pieper for setting up all the tables for us and also for putting them away. Boy Scout Troop 487 helped with the cleanup and also collected all the trash for us, as well as taking donations for the food pantry at their booth. Thanks also to our Police Department who pitched in wherever needed: Chief Rene Silva, Patrolman Heath Smith, and Reserve Officers James Beasley and David Heathco. The biggest thank you goes out to the community who supported this festival by attending and helping out wherever there was a need. Thanks to everyone for making this a fun day for all.
NEW POLICE CAR We sold the 2000 gold Chief’s car for $3000.00, and purchased a 2008 from City of Alvin for $3495.00. We are very excited to be able to add this car so that we can have two very dependable cars, and we appreciate the City of Alvin for helping us.
FOOD PANTRY The food pantry continues to be open each Friday from 10 to 12.
We continue to take donations at the City Hall and the Post Office. We were able to assist 9 families last month. Please allow us to help your family if you need assistance.
